Kentia Palm Care: Slow Growth and Filtered Light
Give Howea forsteriana space, drainage and patience.
Quick questions
Can kentia palm live in lower light?
It tolerates moderate light, but deep shade slows growth. Bright filtered light is a better starting point.
How fast does it grow?
Slowly indoors. Do not try to force growth with extra fertiliser.
How often should I water it?
Water when the upper mix begins to dry, draining the pot; timing changes with conditions.
Why are the frond tips brown?
Check root moisture, old versus new growth and possible pests before choosing a remedy.
Is kentia palm safe for pets?
ASPCA lists Howea forsteriana as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) has arching feather-like fronds and grows slowly. The photograph shows larger potted nursery stock; a young houseplant needs time, not extra feed, to develop that shape.
Light and placement
Give moderate to bright filtered light and avoid harsh direct sun. It tolerates less light than some palms, but deep shade slows growth. Keep it away from cold draughts and allow room for its fronds.
Check the pot
Use a humus-rich, draining mix. Water when the upper mix begins to dry, then let excess drain. Do not let the whole root ball stay dry for long periods or leave it standing in water. Check more often during warm, bright conditions.
Fronds and pests
Brown tips can have several causes; inspect moisture and older versus new growth before deciding on a fix. Watch for spider mites, mealybugs and scale. Avoid unnecessary heavy fertilising.
Pets
ASPCA lists Howea forsteriana as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Do not let pets chew fronds or access fertiliser and sprays.
